Grays And Torreys 2006

From the archives, this is a pre-blog, pre-GPS outing on Greys and Torreys Peaks, two of the first 14,000-foot peaks I climbed (ran?) after moving to Colorado.

It's amazing I was even able to find my way to the top without electronic devices. I mean, look at this rugged path:

I don't even know if I was running peaks back then, although I'd been running for about 7 years. It's probably time for another trip back there.

This was also before I'd filled up my hard drive with wildflower photos:

These pictures were taken with my Canon SD400, which was a great camera and my first digital model. Honestly, in terms of basic performance and clarity, it was better than what you can get nowadays from Canon's SD series. I had to move up to the more expensive S series recently to match it. And it took more reliably-focused macro shots.

You can see the approach trails in the valley below:

Once I got back home, I went for a stroll on Green Mountain in Lakewood. Kind of like decompression before going back indoors. Amazingly I spotted a tornado out on the plains east of Aurora:

    Wait, a TORNADO????

This post should be titled, "BADASS PICTURE OF A TORNADO!" It is my currently unfulfilled dream to see a tornado IRL -- not enough to go out of my way like a stormchaser or something, but to see one "in the wild" from a safe distance of where I happen to be, if that makes any sense. (E.g. I would never plan to go outside at dusk in mountain lion territory on purpose just to see one, but was fortunate enough to see one from the inside of a car once, which was awesome).

    So: nice tornado pic!

  2. Mike - That cracked me up. Thanks.

I grew up scampering into the basement from tornado warnings in Indiana, but you couldn't see them because of the trees. I've seen two in CO already because of the wide-open views -- the other was from 285 towards Harstel. It was pretty far away but I got outta there fast.

Lions. Yeah. I'm content to see them in zoos. Anyone who's had skin shredded by a house cat has some idea how bad that could end up.

  4. This is one of the many reasons why I want to move to CO.

My first trip to CO was to work in and around the San Juan Mountains.

I fell in LOVE with CO then.
