My Cameras

Current

I run/hike/bike/ski/etc, with a Canon S95, and I sometimes use my old SD 1100 as a backup. I also have a G9, but I favor the S95 since it has many of the same capabilities.

The S95 is a bit on the heavy side for running, but the optics are crystal-clear, it shoots in RAW mode (basically = lots of range of lights and darks), and has manual focus among other features.

I adjust the images in Adobe Lightroom afterwards. Rather than editing the original image, it keeps track of your changes and only applies them when you export ("non-destructive" editing). Its interface took a while to get used to, but now I use it almost exclisively. It also contains a catalog to store the edited images tagged with keywords.

Past

Some Canon models that I've owned and liked:
  • S95
  • SD400
  • SD600
  • SD1100
Other

For me the image clarity is the thing, and in general I've liked the look of Canon ELPH images. With a few exceptions, other brands look fuzzy to me. Some Canon models that I've tried and found the images too blurry compared to prior models:
  • SD1200
  • SD780
IMO the SD series is not as sharp as a couple of years ago. This is based on both using the SD series for many years and comparing images side-by-side. Generally I've seen more image fuzziness at the edges than before. However, they still compare favorably to many other brands and models. Some other cameras that seem to have better images than most:
  • Some Panasonic Lumix image are nice.
  • Some of the Sony TX images are nice.
Camera reviews - Steve's Digicams has been useful because it has sample images of the same scenes over and over so you can compare. Because I usually shoot landscapes, I tend to look at the outdoor scene of the park, with the gun in the middle and trees in the background.
